The Department

Canadian Heritage is responsible for formulating policies and delivering programs that help all Canadians participate in their shared cultural and civic life. We support initiatives that engage Canadians and make them proud of our rich and diverse heritage.

The Department’s main activities involve funding community and other third party organizations to promote the benefits of culture, identity and sport for Canadians, which represents approximately 80 percent of its total budget.

The Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages is assisted in his duties by two ministers:

The Minister for Status of Women promotes the full participation of women in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada.

The Minister of State (Sport) strives to enhance opportunities for all Canadians to participate and excel in sport.
