Speeches – 2008
The Honourable Jason Kenney
Grand Opening of the Beechwood National Memorial Centre
Ottawa, Ontario, April 7, 2008
CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY
Ladies and gentlemen,
It is an honour for me to join you today for the opening of the Beechwood National Memorial Centre.
Driving through the grounds today, I could not help but note that the wide range of communities represented here is an excellent reflection of this country' s rich diversity.
Not only is this cemetery an oasis of peace and tranquility in our nation' s capital, but it is also the final resting place for some of Canada' s most illustrious figures – politicians, scientists, social reformers, and artists among them.
As such, it is only fitting that in 2001, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada designated Beechwood as a National Historic Site.
Over the years, Beechwood has evolved into a National Place of Honour, having been selected as the home for the National Military Cemetery of Canada as well as the home of an RCMP National Memorial Cemetery.
Last year, I was here when the Veterans Sections administered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Veterans Affairs Canada were united as the National Military Cemetery of Canada.
And today, I am pleased to be here to open the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, with the Sacred Space area and the Hall of Colours. I find it very moving to see the colours of our military regiments as well as the memorial stained glass window that honours our military chaplains.
The valiant men and women who served in the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are heroes who deserve our highest admiration.
I am very pleased that with the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, we have a beautiful place where Canadians can reflect on the courage, service, and commitment of these extraordinary people.
