I am pleased to be here for the inauguration of Tyndale University College and Seminary' s new campus.
Tyndale has experienced a lot of positive change lately. Not only have you been awarded university status by the Province of Ontario, but you will also begin offering a Bachelor of Education program this summer.
The next big change – the reason we are all here today – is the inauguration of your new Campus, here at Morrow Park. This space will certainly be of great benefit to students of the university and seminary, who will have continued access to Christian education and training in this outstanding setting.
Tyndale prepares people to serve the community through its mission of disciplining the mind, cultivating the character, and nurturing the heart of faith.
Religious communities have often played a central role building an inclusive Canadian society that is charitable and prosperous.
As Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity, I am proud to live in a country that embraces the many cultures and religions of the world. The Government of Canada considers diversity to be one of this country' s greatest strengths and we are committed to strengthening our pluralism and our national cohesion.
Our core Canadian values are freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
This is what our Government means when it talks about pluralism. It' s not only about respecting diversity. It' s about actively participating and learning about each other and about how to work together to form a strong and cohesive Canada.
Canadian society has been built on diversity and our values include respect for ethnic, racial, cultural, and religious diversity.
We are fortunate to live in a place which celebrates our many religions. Our capacity to embrace, respect, celebrate, and value each other' s differences has made Canada one of the most resilient, creative, and welcoming countries on Earth.
The Government of Canada encourages all communities to promote understanding of and respect for other religions and cultures. We understand the importance of openness, democracy, equality, and mutual respect of all peoples.
We recognize that many educational institutions reinforce fundamental Canadian values that bridge our differences and allow us to understand who we are as Canadians.
Organizations like yours have an important role to play in upholding the values of pluralism.
And in this regard, it is important to recognize and celebrate the significant contribution that Tyndale makes to our society.
Tyndale' s various programs embody our founding values of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law and focus on their role in building healthy communities.
And, today, a new chapter begins at this campus. The new program in Education will allow the university to deepen its commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice through programs that prepare graduates to address the needs of students of all abilities and backgrounds.
I would like to offer congratulations on the inauguration of Tyndale University College and Seminary' s new campus. Best wishes for success, as well, as you continue to use education as a way to serve our society.
