The Honourable Jason Kenney

First Annual Richmond Hill Asian Heritage Month Celebration

Richmond Hill, Ontario, May 31, 2008

CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen,

As the Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity, I am very pleased to be here today, and I would like to take this opportunity and thank you for inviting me to the first annual Richmond Hill Asian Heritage Month Celebration.

As you know, the month of May has been declared Asian Heritage Month in Canada in recognition of the many ways in which Asian cultures and traditions have contributed to the strength of our communities and our shared Canadian identity.

Asian Canadians have brought to this country a vibrant and diverse cultural heritage, including a wealth of languages, ethnicities and religions.  All of this has had a tremendous impact on our society.

It is wonderful to see so many people here today who embrace the link between their Canadian citizenship, their civic participation, and their commitment to maintaining links with their cultural heritage.

I am proud to live in a country that embraces many cultures.  Our Government considers Canada' s diversity to be one of our greatest assets, and we are committed to strengthening our pluralism and our national cohesion.

Diversity is a hallmark of our nation.  It is who we are and is what makes our communities more vibrant.  It is something Canadians are proud of– and it is something that other countries recognize.

I would like to congratulate the town of Richmond Hill for your ongoing work to celebrate and promote diversity.  Communities such as this one are part of the reason Canada is such a great place to live and learn. As well, allow me to commend Councillor Chan for the support that you have provided to your community.

This celebration is a great way to end Asian Heritage Month 2008, and I am pleased to be a part of it.

In closing, I would like to express my appreciation to Asian Canadians who, in so generously sharing their heritage, have helped build and contribute to the strength and diversity of our great country.

Have a wonderful afternoon!
