Québec City, Quebec, June 15, 2008
CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
Good evening.
Let me begin by saying how pleased I am to be here with you.
As you take part in this conference, you will no doubt discover the many attractions of Québec city.
You will also have an opportunity to learn about the religious heritage of Québec City and the surrounding area and its contribution to our shared history.
As Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said, "What defines Canada– this country and its cities– is a land of opportunity where everyone, regardless of ethnicity or religion, works and lives and succeeds together."
During this conference week, people from around the world will gather with Canadians from every part of the country to honour their faith and celebrate the 400th anniversary of Québec City, founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain.
This is a very important milestone in our country' s history. It reminds us that French is the founding language of Canada.
There are few North American cities that can celebrate such a past.
This is a historical date for the whole of Canada and for North America. It is from this date that we truly started to become what we are today. Because the founding of Québec also marks the founding of Canada.
From Newfoundland and Labrador to British Columbia, Canadians will join in this great celebration.
2008 is a year for all of us to celebrate our rich past and our bright future.
In closing, I want to invite you once again to discover Québec City during your stay and to join in celebrations of its 400th anniversary– a significant event for all Canadians, because it marks the beginning of the Canadian state.
Thank you. Enjoy the celebrations!
