Culture Matters

  • In 2007, arts and cultural industries contributed over $46 billion to the economy[10]

    • That's more than the insurance industry ($20.8 B)

    • The hotel and restaurant industry ($28 B)

    • The agriculture, forestry, hunting & fishing industries combined ($26.4 B)

    • Or the utilities sector ($31.2B) [11]

  • In 2007, the arts and culture sector employed more than 650,000 Canadians[12]

    • 140,000 are artists[13]

  • Every year, in Canada,

    • the music industry generates over $3 billion in revenue[14]

  • What about other cultural industries?

    • Interactive Digital Media - $5 billion[15]

    • Film, Video and Television - $7.3 billion[16]

    • Book Publishers - $2 billion [17]

    • Periodical Publishers - $2.3 billion[18]

  • The visual and performing arts contribute over $2.5 billion in economic activity annually[19]

  •  Export of culture goods - $1.7 billion[20]

  • Export of culture services - $3 billion[21]

Government Investments In Culture

  • The Federal Government invests more than $3B in arts, culture and heritage[22]

  • Last year, the Government supported

    • 1,000 television productions

    • 75 feature films

    • 300 interactive websites and other digital products

    • 1,130 periodicals and 5,300 books

    • 100 cultural infrastructure projects

    •  550 festivals and performing arts seasons

    • 3,300 arts students

The World Is Changing Quickly

  • Today, 96% of Canadian aged 12 to 17 use the Internet[23]

  • 63% of Canadian youth purchase digital music[24]

  • 24% of all Canadian Internet users download or read a newspaper online at least once a week[25]

  • 87% of Canadian Internet users connect to social networking sites[26]

  • Facebook has 13 million users in Canada[27]

    • That is about 1/3 of the population

  • Canadians viewed more than 3 billion videos online in one month[28]

  • Time it would take to see everything on YouTube?

    • over 400 years[29]
