The deadline has now passed for Canadian cities to formally indicate their interest in developing a bid to host
Expo 2017. Cities were asked to formally indicate their interest to the Department of Canadian Heritage in writing by May 29, 2009.
We have received expressions of interest from the City of Edmonton and the City of Calgary. The next step is for these cities to prepare a formal bid to host this Expo. The deadline to submit these bids to Canadian Heritage is the end of November, 2009.
2017 is the next opportunity for any city in the world to host a three-month Expo.
To host an Expo, a Canadian city must first be selected as Canada's candidate city before the Government of Canada puts forward that city's bid to the Bureau of International Exhibitions / Bureau international des expositions (BIE), which is the international body that recognizes and regulates international expositions.
The Department of Canadian Heritage represents the Government of Canada at the BIE and co-ordinates all activities related to the submission of a Canadian candidacy.
