Statement by the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), on the Occasion of the Submission of the “2010 and Beyond” Report
OTTAWA, March 11, 2010 – On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am pleased to have received and to make public the “2010 and Beyond” report.
A panel of experts reviewed the progress of Own the Podium and other high-performance athletic initiatives. Panel members consulted stakeholders on the current design, structure, and leadership of high-performance initiatives; the relationship between funding partners; sources of funding; accountability; governance; service delivery; and performance targets beyond 2010.
Panel members include David Zussman, Jarislowsky Chair in Public Sector Management at the University of Ottawa, who served as Chair of the panel; Paralympian Chantal Petitclerc; George Heller, former President of HBC; former Olympian Cathy Priestner Allinger; and Karen O’Neill, former Chief Operating Officer for the Rick Hansen Foundation. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the panel members for the extensive work that went into “2010 and Beyond.”
Canada won a record 14 gold medals at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, and we are anticipating an equally exciting performance from our athletes at the Paralympic Winter Games. In Budget 2010, the Government of Canada made new investments to support these athletes. The “2010 and Beyond” report is an important contribution that the Government will take into consideration as we work to continue our athletes’ success. I look forward to continued collaboration with sport leaders and organizations, including the Canadian Olympic Committee and the Canadian Paralympic Committee, to build on the demonstrated success of Own the Podium.
